It can be difficult to know what sort of games we have at our events. We like to describe them as "real world" games, but other people call them "street games", "pervasive games" or "big games". Basically all these terms just mean that they are games that people can play together, in public spaces, without any specialist knowledge. Lots of them will use ideas that you might know from video or board games, and most of them use the environment around them in some way. Some of them use cardboard boxes, and some of them use computers, cameras, phones, and other "tech" elements. Some of them have stories and performers, and some of them are just about scoring as many points as you can.
Who makes these games?
Most of our game designers are made by people who make other things as well, either other sorts of games, or other creative things such as music, theatre or films. Some of them are made by people who just enjoy playing games and have good ideas about what makes it fun!
I think I could make a game.
You probably could, and we would love you to! Get in touch with us if you have a game. We have monthly game testing sessions which are an ideal low pressure way to test your ideas out.
Are these games only for children?
Definitely not. We make games for adults to play, sometimes alongside younger people, but often just for adults. We're big advocates of adults being playful.
Here's some of the games we've run recently:
THE BEE GARDEN
Can you grow the best hive in the park? Play as a foraging bee bringing nectar back to the hive, or as a worker bee turning that nectar into valuable honey. An active team game for all ages combining strategy with fast on-your-feet thinking. A great game for parents and children to play together - very active, colourful, educational promotes working together as a team.
GIDDY UP!
It’s a horse race, except the horses can’t see where they are going, and the jockeys have never guided a horse before. What could possibly go wrong? Another great game for parents and children to play together – players don giant horse heads but cannot see, so need their jockeys to guide them.
RAINBOW RACING
Race along the mixed-up rainbows grabbing treasure along the way! The fastest team will win - don’t get stuck along the way! A quick and simple team game played on a map of coloured chalk – parents can race their kids or team up together to see how fast they can go.
STREET PIRATES
Set sail on the concrete seas and get ready to make your fortune! Travel between the islands trading goods, challenge other ships to battle or undertake special missions. A game for adults who have always secretly wanted to be a pirate – as much fun to watch as it is to play.
AUTOGRAPH HUNTER
Famous celebrities are hiding around the park. Their autographs are worth a lot of money - but they won't sign for just anyone! Use your wits, charm and outrageous lies to get the autographs. A ‘pick up and play’ game for adults keen to find out how good they are at playing the sleuth.
A FEATHERY BIRTHDAY
It’s birthday time in the flock and the chicks are very demanding!
will you be able to find their favourite presents before the other birds can pinch them?
THE GIANT'S CAKES
The giant baker has been very busy indeed and the birthday cakes are all ready! But who is that come-a-creeping? Sneak away as many slices as you can before the giant catches you!
