TALES OF TĀMAKI EXHIBITION
AUCKLAND MUSEUM
September 22 and 23
We played three games as part of the programme accompanying the Tales of Tāmaki exhibition.
The Legend of Tamaki Makaurau
Once this land was flat, and in it lived two iwi. The young of these iwi would often play a game. Under cover of darkness, they would secretly race over ot the other iwi area, and bring back a token as proof they had been there. One night a boy came back with a girl that he had fallen in love with as his token. The missing girl caused a war, and the tohunga, or high priests, used forbidden magic from the earth to destroy an army. Mataahoo, guardian of the Earth's secrets, was furious at having his spells stolen and destroyed everyone with volcanoes! Thus the land around Auckland came to be.
In this game, you are the young sneaking to the other iwi to claim tokens! But be careful not to take something precious to the chief! Or you might start a war and destroy both iwi!
Mysterious History of the Kingdom of Auckland
Imagine a fantasy land like in J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of Rings was real, and once upon a time the mysterious city of "Aucklandia" was on this spot. As historians, it is your job to piece together the artifacts left over from this great city and determine the story that led it to disappear from history.
In this game, you'll work with other historians to make sets of "Artefacts," "Descriptions" and "Functions." Record your discovery on a paper and draw a picture of the artefact. Then you'll add it to the giant timeline of Aucklandia, and try to fit it in the growing story! Your new discovery will have an impact on future discoveries!
The Investigators
In 1895, a man “aged considerably over 50 years” broke into Auckland Museum and stole a collection of valuable and rare coins. The next day he drew attention to himself by trying to use one of the coins to buy a drink; he was quickly arrested, and most of the coins returned to the museum. Some of the coins have remained missing to this day, but within the last few months, mysterious messages and pictures have been sent to the museum that indicate that someone knows where the coins are, and might return them to the museum - but what do they want in return?
Work in teams to find clues, trail suspects, build up a portfolio of information and hopefully return the coins to their rightful place. We’ll provide an “expert” to guide you on the way, and maybe even some costumes so you can go undercover.
